𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜: 𝐓𝐈𝐏 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐔𝐒 𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐘
OMG….. not again! Why are there PILES and PILES of essays to write?!? Most colleges require a WHY US essay. Now, most of you may be wondering if there are any tips and tricks to quickly and efficiently tackle this prompt.
𝐓𝐢𝐩: Weaving everything with the “golden thread”
Knowing how to connect all the pieces of information you have presented from the beginning to the end is really important in the WHY US essay. One simple way to achieve this is by dividing your essay into three parts: past, present, and future. Take a look at this and try to see whether your WHY US essay has answered these questions:
𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭:
This is the part where you present the origin of your interests.
𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭:
Show examples of how you have pursued your interests during high school. These can be extracurricular activities, such as clubs, research, campaigns you have held, or outside classes you have taken. This is the part where you need to demonstrate your INITIATION.
- How have you turned your interests into actions?
𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞:
This is the part where you need to show your INTELLECTUAL VITALITY and how that connects to your past experiences and how you will FURTHER INITIATE to learn this in college.
- How are you going to further explore your interests with the given university’s courses, academic faculty (eg. professors, research), and student organizations?
- How are you going to take advantage of the resources within the university (courses, professors, organizations) to further learn about your interests?
- How are you going to take advantage of the resources outside the university (internships, study abroad programs, social events) to further learn about your interests?
- How are you going to use what you have learned in the university’s classroom to apply outside of your school?
- How are you going to use this education you get from the university to impact your community or serve others? (note: Universities are looking for potential leaders who are willing to make impacts)
