UCAS Personal Statement Undergoing Major Changes
Starting with the 2026 university admissions cycle, the UCAS personal statement will adopt a new structured format, transitioning from a single free-form essay to three specific questions. This change aims to provide clearer guidance for applicants and promote equity in the admissions process.
What’s Changing?
Previously, applicants composed a single personal statement of up to 4,000 characters. Under the new system, the statement is divided into three sections, each addressing a specific question:
Why do you want to study this course or subject?
How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Each section requires a minimum of 350 characters, with the total character limit remaining at 4,000, including spaces.
Why the Change?
UCAS introduced these changes following consultations with students, teachers, and universities to address concerns about fairness and clarity in the admissions process. The structured format aims to level the playing field by providing all applicants with clear prompts, reducing the advantage previously held by those with access to extensive support.
Preparing for the New Format
Applicants should focus on articulating their motivation for the chosen course, linking their academic background to the subject, and highlighting relevant experiences outside formal education. It's important to avoid repetition across sections, as admissions staff will review the responses collectively.
For detailed guidance on crafting responses to each question, UCAS provides resources and tips to help applicants navigate the new format effectively.
