How Many Universities Should You Apply To?
One of the most common questions students ask during the college application process is: How many universities should I apply to? The answer isn’t the same for everyone, it depends on your goals, target countries, and admission timelines.
Here’s how our counselors at Success Admissions recommend approaching it, based on where you’re applying:
United Kingdom (UK)
If you're applying through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service):
You can apply to a maximum of five universities.
You’re only allowed to apply to either Oxford or Cambridge, not both.
Applicants can choose only one course per university, so your choices should reflect a clear academic focus.
Make sure your list includes a balanced mix of ambitious, target, and safer choices based on your predicted grades.
Canada
Applications vary slightly by province and university, but here’s a general guide:
4 to 6 universities is a solid target range.
Many universities have multiple campuses, and you can apply to each one (e.g., UBC Vancouver and Okanagan).
Some provinces use centralized application portals, like Ontario’s OUAC system.
Admissions criteria differ, some universities rely mostly on grades, while others require essays, portfolios, or extracurricular profiles.
Australia
Australia offers flexibility in both timing and admissions:
Aim to apply to 4 to 8 universities.
Most universities assess based on predicted or actual academic performance.
There are two major intakes,February and July, and many universities accept rolling applications.
Early applications are beneficial, especially for scholarship consideration and smoother visa processing.
