Harvard University Supplemental Essay Guide
Applying to Harvard is a big deal, and they want to get to know the real you—the person behind the grades and test scores. The supplemental essays are your opportunity to showcase your unique perspective, demonstrate how you interact with others, and express what you hope to achieve. In short, Harvard is looking for students who are not only brilliant but also engaged—people who will contribute to the vibrant campus community and go on to make a positive difference in the world.
The Essay Prompt
Harvard asks you to answer five short questions (about 150 words each).
These questions cover things like your background, your academic interests, your community, your goals, and what excites you most about learning.
What the Prompts Mean
Each prompt is designed to help the admissions team see a new side of you. They want to know:
What experiences shaped your values or worldview.
What motivates you to learn and explore new ideas.
How you connect with others and contribute to your community.
What you’re passionate about and how it shapes your goals.
Why Harvard is a place where you’ll continue to grow and contribute.
Keep your answers focused, honest, and specific. Even though each essay is short, one strong, personal example can tell a lot about you.
Questions to Help You Write
When brainstorming, ask yourself:
What moment or experience changed how I see the world?
What’s something I’ve learned or built outside of school?
How do I bring people together or support my community?
What topics make me excited to learn more?
What future goals inspire me — and how can Harvard help me reach them?
What unique perspective or quality would I bring to campus life?
Bringing Your Essays Together
Think of your five short essays as five pieces of one story. Each one should highlight a different part of who you are — your curiosity, your growth, your goals, and your values.
Together, they should show:
What kind of learner you are.
What kind of person you are.
How Harvard fits into your journey.
Keep your tone natural and genuine. Write like you’re introducing yourself to someone who really wants to understand you — because that’s exactly what Harvard wants to do.
Harvard wants to know the real you. We help students turn ideas into essays that are authentic, compelling, and memorable. With Success Admissions Center, you’ll navigate the process with clarity and confidence.
